Deathstate is a roguelike, bullet hell, single stick shooter set in a bizarre world of dimensional exploration for pc, mac and soon for PS4 and Xbox One. You play as a number of unique characters trying to discover the fate of Professor Elinberg, who opened a portal to the void. Countless treasures and great and terrible mysteries await if you are bold or foolhardy enough to go beyond the beyond.

The Bizarre World of Deathstate

In Deathstate, you are a traveller of the outer realms. You have discovered the secrets of deep astral projection by entering into a fully death-like meditative state. While in your Deathstate, you can travel to realms hitherto only imagined by those enlightened or mad enough to dwell upon them. Tread lightly though, for these far planes of demi-existence that you choose to explore are extremely hostile to mortal souls.

Deathstate features a unique combination of retro 16-bit visuals and advanced shader effects. Worlds full of painstakingly detailed pixel environments, enemies, and bosses will warp and shift before you, as your mind is subjected to the chaotic influence of the warp.

Battle 80+ Nightmare Enemies in Roguelike Arcade Gameplay

The dimensions within Deathstate are teeming with nightmarish beings. As a procedural bullet-hell game, it’s up to player knowledge and skill to survive emergent dangers in gameplay.

Unlock 13 Player Characters With Unique Abilities

Over repeated runs, players will unlock new characters with unique abilities. Like you, these companions are trapped in uncovering the secrets of the Deathstate. New player characters will enable players to customize their starting build, increasing their chances of surviving the horrors that lie beyond.

Discover Mystic Tomes, Ritual Blades, Relics, and Organs

The treasure you discover in Deathstate pushes the limits on cool and bizarre game loot. You will discover arcane grimoires, mystic weaponry, burial masks, and gem encrusted idols. Most prized are organs dropped by Elite enemies and Bosses. By ingesting these organs, supernatural abilities will become your own, allowing you to push beyond the limits of mortal power!


In 2013 Workinman Interactive hosted an in-office game jam and an early HTML5 build of Deathstate was born. Created by Matt Leffler and Peter Lazarski, they both continued to develop the project during breaks in their day-to-day work, porting the HTML5 demo to Unity. Fueled by their obsession of Cave bullet-hell shmups, Hellraiser films, Lovecraftian horror, and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Deathstate is a true labor of otherworldly love.

Following an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the game’s debut at PAX East 2015, the core Deathstate team expanded for an epic development sprint. After many Thursday nights of design, playtesting, and pizza, the content and gameplay featured in Deathstate has nearly tripled in size.

After more than two years of design, polish, and dungeon crawling, Deathstate features eight worlds to explore filled with over 80 weird monsters to battle and over 150 items, relics, and organs to discover. On October 20th, 2015 the team first unleashed their awesome creation into the world…
