So what is this thing called Deathstate? Some astral artifact from another plane of existence? A distress signal from the 7th dimension?
In 2013 Workinman Interactive hosted an in-office game jam and an early HTML5 build of Deathstate was one of the results. Created by Matt Leffler and Peter Lazarski, they both continued to develop the project during breaks in their day to day work. Fueled by their obsession of Cave bullet hell shmups, Hellraiser films, Lovecraftian horror, and Dungeon Crawl, Deathstate is a true labor of otherworldly love. After over a year of gradual design, polish and porting to Unity, Deathstate features multiple worlds to explore filled with over a dozen weird monsters to battle and nearly one hundred items, relics, and organs to discover.
Game mechanics-wise, we’re calling Deathstate a “single player bullet hell shmup action rpg with roguelike elements”. It’s a mouthful, but it encompasses everything that Deathstate has become. We’re still working on systems to support progression and we have a lot of content to add, but right now Deathstate offers some truly weird journeys into ever changing procedural plane-scapes. Matt has been working on some really exciting shaders and effects to make Deathstate a truly dynamic visual space to explore. Also we have some really nasty enemies and bosses brewing that we can’t wait to include in the build!
Stay tuned for more news as we continue to work on Deathstate. We’re looking forward to sharing more about our process and inspiration as we go. And you’ll definitely want to know when we have a public demo available, so sign up here to be on the Deathstate email list. Join us on social media too!
